Silent Storm headphones were used for a silent disco event at USD.
Events in the middle of the week are not all too common. Silent Disco dance parties on Wednesdays are probably less common. But that’s what this was, a headphones only party at the University of San Diego. This dance party, organized by an on campus student organization, was open to all students and took place in a tented courtyard.
Silent Disco’s utilize headphones to transmit music directly to the attendees. Headsets were provided by Silent Storm, a company I’ve worked with on other parties. But this was the first time I worked alongside other DJs. The unique aspect of utilizing these headphones is they have three selectable channels. Each DJ -- in this case myself, DJ Extreme and DJ Nikks -- feeds the headphones with their music. DJ Extreme added to the senses by spinning music videos, mostly old school hip-hop and R&B. Nikks spun current hip hop, while I played various sub genres of House Music.
The headphones blink with an LED light that shows what channel it’s selected on. This makes it fun to see who’s listening to what, but also gives good visual feedback for the DJ.
